All in the family sistersNew Baby Sister | Love

family sistersA new baby sister has finally arrived.  Welcome to the newest member of this family!  She is beautiful and very smiley with a loving big sister to show her the ropes and give lots of kisses. Like all second babies, she is a very good sport and doesn’t flinch a bit when her big sister is hugging her tight. sister love baby sister new baby sisterMom is handling two babies at the same time so well (whether she realizes it or not). Whew! I imagine exhaustion has really set in since we last saw each other. I’m glad I was there to capture so many smiles and kisses. That is what we hope to remember from those early days. sisterBig Sister was oh-so-sweet and a busy bee.  She was asleep by the time I was leaving!

A sister is a gift to the heart, a friend to the spirit, a golden thread to the meaning of life.

Atlanta Family Clothing Ideas for Spring: Muted shades of pastels will be popular for Spring 2015 with minty Lucite Green being a real stand-out. Green is the color for March for me. Yes, St. Patrick’s Day but I think of the green grass coming back and remember the years of men wearing bright green sports coats at Easter too.  You can easily use green to dress your family for Spring photo sessions. Use a base of jeans or khakis and creams and add a few touches of your color of choice. March and April are wonderful times for family photo shoots especially in the late afternoon. It also gives plenty of time to gift Mother’s Day or Father’s Day portraits.

Monique LHuillier writes for Pantone why Lucite Green and pastels inspire her this year. Even better is her website HERE which is awesome for fashion and clothing ideas.  Don’t miss her wedding stuff if you are a bride-to-be!

Atlanta Family Clothing Ideas for Spring

I would choose greens as my primary color for Atlanta locations that are more urban using a lot of brick.  I would also like to see it on nature trails where backdrops are many brown trees and leaves. It would not be my favorite in the summer with very green grassy lawns.

Easter is early April this year so Moms of little girls are already shopping for pastel Easter dresses. J. Crew has some unique and gorgeous little girl things in their dress shop.  You may not have time to order a custom dress to be ready for Easter with Hannah Kate however if you follow their Facebook page they often sell ready made dresses and outfits from their overstock. Land’s End and Gymboree have more affordable options.

Scuba Blue and Aquamarine are also “hot” for Spring and these blues universally look great on everyone and are good options. Pastels don’t always look good on everyone (like me!) so move that direction if Easter Egg Colors aren’t your thing! Atlanta Family Clothing Spring

atlanta-family-photography-inspirationFinally a gorgeous warm March day!  Here are some more bright colors to add cheer to your already great day (if you are in the South). These colors are sunny and the textured layers add the warmth you might need on another cooler day in March. This color scheme would be great for outdoor sunset sessions right now when the world is still brown and neutral but has warm light from the afternoon sun.

It is getting really close to Spring so time to start scheduling photo sessions before the best time options are gone. If you have bigger kids, take a great family picture in the Spring and beat the rush for holiday sessions.

“I have this girlfriend who didn’t go to hers, and every once in a while, she gets this really terrible feeling–you know, like something is missing. She checks her purse, and then she checks her keys. She counts her kids, she goes crazy, and then she realizes that nothing is missing. She decided it was side effects from skipping the prom”–Iona (Pretty in Pink)

I can’t mention PROM without referencing Pretty in Pink. It isn’t possible.

Walton High School Prom is tonight!  There are a couple of schools having them this early which seems cold for all the strapless gowns we will see! Whether yours is tonight or in a few months, I have some tips to get the best prom pictures.

How to get the Best Prom Pictures

  • Details: Take “detail shots.” Take some snapshots of the time when you are getting ready.  Are you getting your hair professionally styled? Capture the moments leading up to the prom. Take a picture of your hair from the back, your earrings, fancy nails, shoes, dress hanging ready to wear and maybe even the big mess you made to look perfect!
  • Cliche: Corsage and pinning boutonnière shots are mandatory. You can’t NOT do it.
  • Outdoor-sy: If possible, take your prom pictures outdoors. The light outside will be much more beautiful and create more lovely pictures.  It will show the colors and details of your dress better and allow you to avoid harsh flash photography. Even if it is cold outside, go out for a quick photo session.
  • Background: Choose one that isn’t too distracting and as flattering as possible. Trees or nature is an obvious choice but see my next tip as it is more important to me!
  • Light: Find the best even soft light outside. Choose the location for your picture based on the light and not backdrop. Moms or Dads may say to go stand by the beautiful blooming azalea bush but is it in direct sunlight that will make you squint?  If you start your photo session earlier in the day instead of late afternoon, you may need to find a shaded area so the light does not cause harsh shadows on your face.
  • Posing: Ladies, do not stand straight facing the camera especially with your arms hanging down. If something on your body bends, bend it slightly.  Angle your body towards the camera and shift your weight to your back leg. If you put your hand on your hip, make sure your elbow is not out too far out in an exaggerated way.  Keep that arm relaxed and consider putting it on your date’s arm if he is available.
  • Face: Remember to put your face a little forward so you don’t have a double chin and you are showing a jawline.
  • Friends: Invite your friends over for a photo session. This is much more fun.  I even did this when I went to the prom in the 1800’s.  I still have those pictures of all of us together and it made it less awkward to be taking pictures with a date.
  • Papparazzi: If you have many parents taking pictures of your group at the same time, make sure they take turns.  It is the worst to have 100 pictures of a group and everyone in the picture is always looking in a different direction.  Paparazzi Parents should take turns getting a picture of the group so everyone has eyes looking at one person/camera.
  • Candid: Get some candid shots of your group talking and not so posed.  These are often more fun and will be your favorites. If things are feeling awkward and too stiff in your pictures, try these first. Do some silly pictures just to break the ice. It will make everyone relax.
  • Closeness: Stand unnaturally close in your pictures with your date and also in a big group. Temporarily erase your thoughts of personal space for a moment.  Everyone should be touching just a little with no gaps between people. It makes for a better picture.
  • Girlfriends: Get some shots of just the girls (and just the guys).  You will definitely want to have some special pictures of you and your girlfriends.  Your high school girlfriends will always be special to you and you will want those pictures the most.  I hate to say it but some of the guys could be out of the picture in the future but your girlfriend pics can be displayed for a long time!
  • Girlfriends Part II: Again with the elbows… if you are in a picture with 4 other friends, don’t all of you have your arms on your hips with elbows out. Mix it up.  Two of you can have an arm loosely on a hip (not too high) but have the others put arms on a friend’s shoulder or arm. It will still keep the arm from being against the body tight and if you are angled to the camera you will look slimmer and it will be flattering.
  • Advanced: For the group shots, have everyone stand at a different level and do something different. Avoid long lines of a group with everyone standing the same way. Mixing it up will make your group pictures much more interesting.
  • Guys: Feel free to put your hands in your pockets if you don’t know what to do with them.  DO NOT jam them deep in the pockets and keep a thumb out of the pocket.  Consider doing this with one hand and have the other hand on your date’s back.
  • Angle: Vary the shots so they aren’t all the same. Close-ups, Wide shots to show full dress..mix it up.
  • Outsource: Hire a professional photographer so you don’t have to think of anything and just be in the moment. Let them guide your posing for the most flattering shots. If you have a group of friends, this is very affordable when split between couples.
  • FUN: Have lots of fun on your very memorable night!

See how in these groups even when they are lined up, they aren’t completely straight? They vary their poses and everyone is doing something different.  Also note that you don’t see very wide elbows with hands on hips by all the girls. These pictures are much more “Hollywood” than yours will be but use it as a guideline.

How to make the most money as a seller at a consignment sale consginment-sale

It is Spring consignment sale season.  Many sales are happening this weekend and others will be accepting their items soon. If you are a seller that has not started tagging your items (like me!), I have some tips for you.

I think the best thing about being a seller at a consignment sale is getting all that stuff out of your house. Most will agree that is and should be the goal. Eliminate clutter, toys and too much stuff! So money or not, you will accomplish a lot by being motivated to move the excess out of your house and on to others.

However, I have some tips if you want to also make some extra cash. Make sure you are reimbursed for the time it will take, otherwise you might as well donate to a charity outright.  I have been a seller twice a year for about 12+ years, volunteered at a big sale for over 10 years and learned so much to share.

Along with some friends with the same experience, I figured out how you become the top seller and money maker of a sale.  First, you need three children with different sexes. 🙂  Not everyone will qualify but you can still get a great return if you do what I always did. For many years I made a net of $1,000-$1,200+ per sale.  I made the most money when my baby was outgrowing the toddler stage and I could really start selling all the “baby stuff”. However, the number one thing I did to make the most money:

Best Tip

Price items higher than the next person. It is that simple and make sure it is discounted for the last day of the sale if that is an option. Make the discount price the reasonable price you want to get for your item. There is some level of commitment involved because I always took back everything that did not sell.  This isn’t your best method if you are trying to eliminate clutter to never see the stuff again.  If you are a first time seller, you should always ask to get your items back at the end of the sale as a gauge of how you did.  It will be a good indication of if you are pricing too high OR too low.  Keep in mind if it is a very large sale (200-300 sellers) you may still get good items back that were priced appropriately by the sheer volume of items that were available to buyers. When you get items back, you can transfer to another upcoming sale or save for next year (think extra space and big storage bins!)

Next best tip

Don’t buy more at the consignment sale than you sold!  I had to get through the baby stage to make this one happen because there is just too much good stuff to buy for little ones! Take advantage of your early shopping advantage and make a list of what you need before you shop.

Things to tag first

Tag your big money-making items first in case you run out of time before drop off.  You will run out of time.

Read the instructions for your sale. Many items may be limited to a certain number (i.e. books, shoes, maternity)

  • BIG – any big toys, big baby equipment and car seats.
  • Your very best clothes in great condition – put outfits together. Make sure very clean and no stains. I never iron what I’m selling but make sure it is presentable.
  • Shoes still in great shape.  If your sale allows, bag up so shoppers can’t try on and possibly lose your tag.
  • Coats/jackets – don’t forget light jackets in Spring if they are accepted.
  • Jeans – If your sale will accept them in Spring, this is a great thing for buyers to find. When kids are outgrowing clothes by the end of the year, people need some jeans to get them through those last cool months.
  • Costumes – Dress up items are always popular especially if they are the princess variety and everyone needs a new (cheap) costume for Halloween in the Fall.  Don’t forget dance costumes and dance shoes.
  • Books – Concentrate on your best books first. Save the paperbacks for last and try to bag collections together.

Just like a garage sale, unfortunately you will get shoppers that try to cheat, switch tags and outright steal.  Tag and package your items with this in mind. Be very descriptive on your tags to help protect yourself.  Which book tag do you think would be switched first?  “Book” or “Goodnight Moon large hardcover Book”?

Final Notes for You

Local Facebook groups are now popular to sell your bigger items. This does allow you to keep the commission fee (typically 35%) a consignment sale would take. I will leave that up to you depending on the item. If it is priced high enough you can make more that way.  Consignment shoppers also have the mentality that they are getting a deal so it is difficult to sell at very high prices and it might be better to try online communities if you have a whole bedroom suite. On the flip side, a consignment sale doesn’t have the risk-factor of meeting strangers. With recent news reports of incidents it is a little scary and I encourage you to take advantage of meeting in police station parking lots that have been offered.  I’m not a fan of yard sales and I think a consignment sale can get you more money even with the commission cut. Bonus – you don’t haggle with people wanting everything for a dollar. Plus you get a lot more specialized traffic to view your items and advertising is not needed.

Question most asked: How do I even price things? Your guess is as good as mine! That is why you sell a first time as a trial run and get your things back to see what didn’t sell.  As a general rule price things at 1/2 of retail price if they are like new and in really great shape.  If it looks a little worn or not very special try 1/3 of original price.  When I say that I price things “high” it means that for a Gymboree like-new outfit that is really cute, I will put $8 or $10.  Unless it is a designer consignment sale, not many people will pay that unless they fall in love with it or there isn’t much competition in that age group. I’m fine with it because I’m still okay if it goes for $5 on the last day too.  You can have the same thing brand new with accessories attached and it will not sell for $12-$15 (I see this a lot).

  • If something is really worn or just play clothes, try $2 an item with half price the last day.
  • If you have brand new infant items that were never worn, you still won’t get more than $1 or $2 an item which is a shame.  There is just too much competition for great baby clothes.
  • DVDS: $5 or under depending on how great it is. A TV show DVD (Dora, Arthur) won’t get as much.
  • I would always price an exersaucer type infant toy at $25 or more at half price or discounted the last day.  Unless you are scared of getting it back, of course.  You don’t see them as much any more but I remember the days when the sale would open and people would run for them to be the first one. So why would you charge $2?
  • Car seats and strollers are tricky to me so stick to the 1/2 or 1/3 rule unless it is old and then do less.
  • Jogging strollers do very well so charge more depending on the brand ($65-$100).
  • Infant bedding – lots of competition and you need the right person to see it so go lower.
  • Games and puzzles sell well and go fast. Use the 1/2 price theory but make sure EVERY piece is included.
  • In general, older aged children’s clothes allow you to charge more than a 2 year old. Big kids wear out there clothes faster and there are less options plus they cost more to begin with so it is common to see 10 or 12 year old boys jeans for $8-$10.

This is all I can think of but feel free to message me if you have a question about something I didn’t mention.

Disclaimer: all of this is just my opinion to help and not proven. The particular sale, volume of items, market of your town, economy, etc. all make a difference.
